The main activity of the GraphCAT Community is to curate and develop a project portfolio that simultaneously drives progress and showcases regional excellence. To this end we have established a simple process for submitting GraphCAT project proposals. All projects should be aimed at the development of new graphene technologies and applications leading to new products and services.
Projects will fall broadly into the following categories realted to the EU Technology Readiness Level (TRLs) definitions:
aimed at validating the technological feasibility of existing proof-of-concepts (TRL 2 to 3)
aimed at the development of pre-industrial or pre-clinical demonstrators or prototypes of graphene applications (TRL 4 to 6)
aimed at the development of a graphene-centric products or service as close to market as possible (TRL 6 to 9).
The following desirable key performance indicators have been established to inform the selection of GraphCAT proposal projects:
|Project Type||Description||TRL||KPIs||Number of Projects||Total Budget (RIS3CAT funding rate 50%)|
|Project to assess technological feasibility of an existing PoC||3+||Publication related to the idea; Patent application (desired); Bring in industrial associated members.||8||€100k|
|Development of pre-industrial or pre-clinical demonstrators or prototypes of graphene applications||4-6||Images and videos demonstrating the prototype; Details of specs and performance (benchmarking); Bring in industrial associated members.||4||€300k|
|Development of a
product or service
|6+||Scalability is shown to be possible in principle; Small-volume production (about 30 units); Plans for performance verification in an operational environment; Business plan; Have established a company by project end.||2||€800k|
The Scientific and Technical Coordination Team (made up of two members from the ICN2 and ICFO) will develop detailed project selection criteria for each project category. The project formats and approval processes will follow similar guidelines to those published in the RIS3CAT Communities call. Note that GraphCAT projects are expected to have a clear focus on innovation and technology transfer/translation but do not necessarily require direct industry participation (although this is preferred).
A two-step selection process will be followed for project selection. In the first step, a committee of external reviewers (Expert Panel) will review the submitted proposals, and evaluate and rank them according to the selection criteria defined in the call. In the next step, the Scientific and Technical Coordination Team will make a final selection of the projects based on this input. The results of the selection process will be directly communicated to the principal investigator of the submitted proposals.
Projects smaller in scale and duration than the ones in the table above will also be considered.
The selected projects will then be included in the GraphCAT Proposal submitted to the Generalitat de Catalunya (Secretaria d’Universitats i Recerca) for formal review and approval of funding.
Project details and funding requirements
Project partners must meet the elegibility conditions to participate in the GraphCAT Community as ordinary members. Project consortia that include at least one member from industry or the biomedical sector are preferred (though this is not a requirement).
Projects are to be coordinated by one Principal Investigator. Specific agreements for IP protection and confidentiality must be agreed upon and signed by all members participating in the project.
1 to 3 years.
Projects of type 1 or 2 would typically have a total operating budget of €100,000 to €300,000, of which 50% is co-funded by GraphCAT through RIS3CAT funds and the remaining 50% need to be provided by project beneficiaries. Funding for type 3 projects with clear potential to bring a new technology to market and/or have a strong commercial impact may be significantly larger (budget €800.000), depending on the funding made available to GraphCAT. Projects involving the development of biomedical technologies in collaboration with hospitals and clinicians may also have unique requirements.
Subject to RIS3CAT funding conditions, the expenditure categories eligible for co-funding are quite broad, encompassing personnel, equipment, services, training, IP protection, consumables and travel. The only condition is that all must be specifically attributable to the project and critical to achieving its objectives. Overheads are set at 25% of direct costs.
The GraphCat selected projects will be funded at 50% funding rate. The applicant entities must ensure that they can assume the remaining 50% with own funds.
Within GraphCat we define three categories, namely: (1) Proof of concept, (2) Prototype and (3) Product service. The main differences rely on the targeted Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) and thus the nature and ambition of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) shall vary depending on the category of project.
The following file shows the criteria to be addressed for each of the project categories defined above.
Submit your project
Use the form below to submit your project proposal. More details may be requested if your proposal is shortlisted for the second step in the selection process. Please keep in mind that the final GraphCAT Proposal will be submitted to the Generalitat in Catalan or Spanish.
At the end of the submission process you will be asked to upload a file including a budget and KPI indicators. Please use the following Excel template including two worksheets.
